The Star Onions are a group formed in September 2004 dedicated to arranging and performing Final Fantasy XI music. They debuted with a short concert on a Chains of Promathia event and subsequently made a studio album. They have since made appearances on three Final Fantasy XI festivals in Japan and the West with some new material.

Their regular members are bass guitarist Naoshi Mizuta, pianist Kumi Tanioka, and guitarist Tsuyoshi Sekito. Keyboardists Hidenori Iwasaki and Masato Kouda and drummer Michael-Christopher Koji Fox also regularly work with them. Guest performers are saxophonist Osamu Koike, vocalist Aundrea Hopkins, and drummers Arata Hanyuda and Hiroki Murakami.

They have a wide stylistic range. Their debut concert featured mostly light acoustic arrangements while their first album had a jazz focus. They have also dabbled in solo piano, synth-pop, techno, rock, and gospel music. Despite not acquiring equivalent popularity to The Black Mages, The Star Onions enhance the colour and emotions of the music from Vana'diel.
