The Black Mages were formed when six Square Enix members united to perform the material from the partly synthesized The Black Mages on two concerts. They held their debut concert at Shibuya-AX, Tokyo on April 26, 2003, which ran into the morning of April 27. During the introduction of band members, Michio Okamiya performed a rendition of the Chocobo Theme and Nobuo Uematsu performed the intro to Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water." It was followed by a Hanjuku Hero VS 3D event with a performance of the song "Without Yolk..." by Isao Sasaki.
A 30 minute follow-up concert occurred on November 3, 2003 at Kanagawa University Auditorium #2 as part of the free Kanagawa Jindai Festa. As Nobuo Uematsu graduated from the University they were performing in, The Black Mages all wore the student uniform colors.
