Guidelines for Submitting Music

Thank you for you interest in submitting music to Square Enix Music Online! Please read the instructions below carefully before submitting anything. If the guidelines aren't followed precisely, there is a good chance that your submission will never be posted.

Submitting Arrangements

Subject Matter: Only music for albums or games that features at least one composer/arranger that has collaborated with Square Enix will be posted. For the most part, this is exclusive to the scores featured in the album list, though music submissions for Square Enix games that have not had their score released will also be accepted. Games made by Square Enix include all games made by Square or Enix games prior to their merge on April 1, 2003, as well as all post-merge Square Enix games. Medleys will be accepted, but it is preferred that the subject matter of these are limited to one game only.

Format: All sheet music must either be in Finale format (.mus), Sibelius format (.sib), Pre-Defined format (.pdf), or an image-based format (.jpg, .gif, .bmp, .png). If the sheet music contains multiple images, please zip them into one file. If an audio format is chosen, the arrangements must be submitted in MIDI format (.mid), not MP3 format (.mp3), unless you are prepared to host the MP3 yourself. If you submit sheet music, it is greatly preferred you submit a MIDI of the arrangement too, as both will be helpful to the site's visitors.

Style: Many mainstream music styles, such as rock, electronica, pop, hip hop, country, reggae, and heavy metal should be avoided from arrangements. OverClocked Remix is generally the best place to submit these. The majority of our arrangements tend to be of a classical, romantic, jazz, or modernist/post-modernist nature, though there are some exceptions.

Instruments: For fan-arranged MIDIs, there is no limit to the choice of instruments used, since these are only used for listening to. However, for sheet music, it is preferred that the arrangement submitted is intended for solo piano, or a common ensemble (e.g. string quartet, full orchestral, piano duet). If non-piano arrangements are made, make sure that the all notes can be played by the chosen instrument (i.e. they are not outside their range). Those arrangements that use uncommon instruments or ensembles (e.g. a bagpipes, bass trombone, and viola de gamba trio) should be submitted as fan-arranged MIDIs, as it is extremely unlikely they will ever be played.

Originality: The music must be your own work. It must not be a mere translation from the original music with a few slight alterations or another arranger's works, as this does not constitute an original arrangement and infringes on copyright regulations. Arrangements that demonstrate general creativity and a willingness to expand on the original will be preferred, so long as the arrangement is recognisable with respect to the original. It is acceptable that you submit arrangements made by yourself and posted at other sites, so long as the owner of the other site allows this and you inform us of your intentions.

Musical Qualities: All arrangements submitted will be assessed based upon their musical qualities. Though we do not expect masterpieces, arrangements should demonstrate a sound knowledge of musical styles nonetheless and be relatively free of technical errors. We're not especially strict about quality, but do maintain a certain standard and enjoy arrangements that show strong musicianship.

Complexity: Arrangements that use complex musical features are often preferred. However, all arrangements submitted in a sheet music format should be playable for the instrumentalists concerned of an intermediate to advanced standard. Sheet music is, after all, principally there for people to play.

Length: All arrangements should be at least 1:30 in length. Good arrangements are often much longer than this and work well if they are supported by lots of musical variety. Be expansive wherever possible and don't hesistate to add original sections that are not part of the original. Of course, however, excessively long arrangements should generally be avoided.

Submitting Album MIDIs

For Original Soundtracks and arranged albums that do not currently have MIDIs available for download, you are welcome to sequence your own MIDIs for these albums and submit them. Check through the albums on the album list to see which albums this applies to. If whole albums have no MIDIs included, it is preferable that you submit a collection of MIDIs, rather than just submit one MIDI. The MIDIs should be sequenced so that they sound as close to the original material as possible. It is recommended that you do this directly from official sheet music, if available, unless you are particularly good at transcribing by ear or have an MP3-MIDI converter. Without exception, the MIDIs submitted must be sequenced by you.

How to Submit

If you have read all the guidelines and would still like to submit arrangements and album MIDIs, please copy and paste everything between the two lines below into the body of an email and send all the requested information and your file attachment to tim [at] squareenixmusic.com (no spaces). We will review the submission and, if accepted, you should see it on the site within a week. Thank you.
