Review

You know, it's been 15 years since Uematsu's first solo album, Phantasmagoria, and I rather enjoyed it. Fortunately, he is producing his second solo album this year, entitled 10 Stories. Hints so far are that the album will be fun and varied one dedicated to telling some children's stories.

Uematsu's second single from the upcoming album is entitled "Coconut Castaway" and was released through iTunes in August 2009. It differs greatly from his previous single but still retains that LocoRoco or Katamari Damacy style. Just like "Here Comes Conga Boy," it's a very playful song, full of female vocalists in a variety of styles, under the collective "Nobiyo and the Dog Ears".

The music behind it is, again, quite interesting. This single takes on a more Caribbean flair, with some beautiful acoustic guitar and steel drum work (like that wasn't obvious!). There is a slower section that focuses on accordion and some interesting percussion usage, giving it a bit of a French flair. The crazy part is that Uematsu even throws in a small bit of vocal distortation. It's quite a beautiful section. The focus of 10 Stories continues to be extremely catchy and I only hope the rest of the album is this catchy. I wonder what's in store for the next single, but you can be sure I'll be there to cover it!

Overall Score: 8/10
