09 Aug 2012 - Review Focus: Giant Bandcamp Indie Special
In the last five years, indie games have brought some of the greatest innovations in the video game market. The same applies to their soundtracks, which tend to be a breath of fresh air in a field often dominated by samey approaches and mainstay artists. Until recently, these soundtracks have been relatively neglected on SEMO. But they have become so good, so numerous, and so influential that we couldn't allow this to happen for much longer. Through the initiatives of Simon and Joe, we have been gradually posting reviews of all sorts of indie soundtracks on the site in the last year. And now, we dedicate an entire huge update to the field...
Below are reviews for a wide selection of indie soundtracks — 25 new reviews, plus a handful more than we previously posted. Many of these reviews highlight just how creative and entertaining indie soundtracks have come. From emotionally intense themes (Jamestown, Tower of Heaven), to narrative-driven experiences (Dear Esther, The Path, from retro hybrids (Gravity Hook, FEZ) to weird mashups (Catacomb Snatch, Plants vs. Zombies), there's plenty of reasons why these soundtracks are interesting.
Check out the reviews below for more. As most of the soundtracks were released through Bandcamp, you can sample them in full while reading the reviews.
