16 Dec 2011 - Oscar Winner Gustavo Santaolalla Scores The Last Of Us

During a press conference this week, developer Naughty Dog revealed that Argentinian composer Gustavo Santaolalla is scoring the music for the recently revealed PlayStation 3 title The Last Of Us. The acoustic guitar-punctuated main theme for the game was also played at the press conference.

Originally an influential rock artist, Santaolalla transitioned into film music during the 1990s and won Academy Awards for the scores for Brokeback Mountain and Babel. Known for selecting his projects carefully, the composer was so impressed with Naughty Dog's vision for the game that he agreed to be a part of the project.

Concerning the musical direction, creative director and writer Neil Druckmann noted "With this music we're trying to get emotion - we're not going for horror. There's going to be horrific things happening in this game, but that's not the focus of it. The monsters aren't the focus of it, it's the relationship between Joel and Ellie."
