Valkyria Chronicles Music Discussion -
03-18-2008, 10:55 PM
Does anyone know when this is coming out? The last thing I heard was "the first quarter of the year" or something to that affect. Do we have an official release date yet?
And also, what about FFXIII? Sorry if some of this is old news, but I've got some catching up to do. Any sign of when Hamauzu's FFXIII shall be released?

Let's see. Valkyria Chronicles (the Western title) is released April 24th in Japan with a release in other territories this autumn.
As for Final Fantasy XIII, I suspect that it will be late 2008/early 2009, considering that SE's president said he could get both done (Dragon Quest IX and Final Fantasy XIII) this year, but doesn't want to release them at the same time. As for soundtracks for either, I'd suspect sometime near the release for FFXIII. Valkyria Chronicles might see an album release further down the road from release, if at all.

The game is being released on April 28, 2008. I think a soundtrack release is quite likely.
As for FFXIII, I think it'll likely be a 2009 release.

Yeah, don't expect FFXIII for a while. Maybe the soundtrack will arrive before the actual game, but yeah...

I think it will be closer than most people think. Apparently, a demo is in the works for people to get acclimated to the new battle system. I think it's a possibility for a holiday release/early 09 release in Japan at least.

That would be a shame if Sakimoto's music didn't earn a release. I simply cannot wait for FFXIII OST! I'm a huge fan of Hamauzu and I've been waiting to see him get a large project such as this. I can only imagine what it will sound like (I fear, a little, that it will be mostly electronic, instead of the acoustic and piano based writing that I've come to love from Hamauzu--either way, his music is gold... to me).
I had forgotten about DQIX... I like getting the Symphonic Suites--I was a bit disappointed with VIII's SS, especially the recording quality, so I'm hoping Sugiyama can make a comeback with IX.
How much of Valkyrie Chronicles is orchestrated?

Cant say...
The main theme is, and it sounds awesome ;-)
It'll be worth the wait.

The game is out in april in japan
As long as it's not a bomb like Opoona, that will probably release a soundtrack or a gamerip some time after that. I am also really looking forward to this one.

I have seen two trailers of the game and... not impressed.
Not only the character design is just so-so, but the music is also... just so-so. Except for one or two excerpts maybe.
Sakimoto can definitely do better than that.

Yay! I am a fan of Sakimoto's, but moreso when he has the forces of a full orchestra (and there's far too little of that, as far as I'm concerned. The Staff Roll, and opening and ending movies for FFXII were magnificent--Odin Sphere's orchestrations were far too sparse--and the only track on Deltora Quest was 40 seconds long! I can only hope that much of the Valkyrie Chronicles score is orchestrated!!!)

Juan,
You should really check out Sakimoto's score RomeoXJuliet. It's all performed by an orchestra (except a couple tracks which are synthesized). That score is something to behold and I hold it as one of Sakimoto's best efforts.

I've been meaning to place an order online for a while now. I was waiting so that I could include SOMA BRINGER in the order, so now that that's been released, there should be nothing stopping me from going and getting the Romeo X Juliet score... except of course for two papers which I desperately need to get written. Placing the order can be a reward for finishing the papers!
The thing I love about Sakimoto's work is that much of it is not immediately enjoyable. Take for instance my first score of his: Final Fantasy XII. I really didn't care for it at first, but I forced myself to listen to it again, and suddenly I began wanting to listen to it again and again and now it has revealed itself as the genius masterwork that it truly is. The same thing with Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy Tactics. I find, though, that Sakimoto's solo efforts are best because he is allowed more thematic continuity rather than "new track, new composer" (like Odin Sphere, ASH, and Deltora Quest). I've just begun listening to Stella Deus again--that had the same issue as with FFXII where I didn't care for it much, but this second listen is doing it much justice, and I'm seeing that it is a very nice piece of music.
Really the only Sakimoto score that I've never been able to really get into is Breath of Fire V. I'll try it again, though, and hopefully it will become yet another masterpiece in my Sakimoto collection.
I hope that we see, sometime, a special Sakimoto tribute release like with Hamauzu's Vielen Dank--I always like hearing composers' original compositions outside of the game context to see if it's different or similar or both in ways. I'd have a field day listening to original Sakimoto concert pieces.
Man was this reply long. Sorry that I just went off like that.

Actually, Odin Sphere HAS continuity in other forms (field + battle using the same theme), and Kaneda has also written a Main Theme arrangement in that game. Elminage also featured some arrangements of the main theme by other Basiscape members. So I think it's merely a matter of decision or personal preference.
-
I think Sakimoto will write most of the music in this game simply because the game is quite big-profiled with a more than 10 million USD budget. Smaller projects like Coded Soul or Elminage may be handled by other members but not big projects like FFTA2, Romeo X Juliet and this one.

Most of Basiscape are involved as far as I am aware, though Sakimoto's involvement should be greater in this project (hopefully). Iwata is said to have orchestrated work in this one as well (though this could be rumored) :/
Thanks for the videos
Only less than a month to go!

You're right, there certainly could be other composers.
It's just that so far all the music in videos/trailers of this game I think is definitely by Sakimoto, I don't hear any of the other composers.
Here's another new one:

As far as I can tell, production of Valkyria Chronicles started after Sakimoto around August 2007. By then, A.S.H. Opoona, Odin Sphere, Grim Grimoire, Deltora Quest, Romeo X Juliet, and Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift were all finished. Although he could be working on other announced projects, I think The Tower of Druaga was his main other commitment during that time (Elminage and Coded Soul were very small projects for him, though I think he did a far better job with the main themes than Grim Grimoire and Odin Sphere). So I think Sakimoto will be taking a large role, but I'd be surprised if he were the sole composer. And, to be honest, disappointed too!

Druaga is obviously solo Sakimoto from what I've heard in 4 episodes.

The music so far sounds synth, so I have reason to suspect that only a small handful of tracks will be performed.

According to Chris' update, this score resembles Final Fantasy XII. That's a good thing to me, because that's my favorite Sakimoto score. However, at the same time, none of the trailer music seems to be as colorful as Final Fantasy XII. I guess only time will tell, though. The update also mentioned that a lot of it is performed by Eminence, but perhaps the trailers/previews only showcase the synthesized compositions?

Here is information from the game credits quoted from PQTN at CocoeBiz:

Pretty sure that it's a solo work unless Noriyuki Kamikura and Kimihiro Abe are minor co-composers (but like Romeo X Juliet probably orchestrators).

Damn, you beat me to it!
I'm still unsure of this OST. This does remind me a LOT of FFXII though. I hear some of the motifs present in "Desperate Fight" in FFXII with this battle theme.

That's exactly the same thing I noticed when I listened to the song. The style is identical. Hope, Sakimoto created a bit more variety in VC's score...
But by the way, some great news: the new password for this file is rpgmmbsdaolian.
I wrote an email with the request of the password and rpgmm, the man who ripped this thing, was so kind and sent it to me right away. Haven't listened to it fully yet, but it seems promising... Enjoy.

Oh, thank you for the password. From what I've heard, it sounds extremely interesting... and it also sounds like it's a solo effort from Sakimoto. I'm really relieved to hear this rip.

Well, if the Underworld on our forum is the person who uploaded that Youtube video, first of all, I must say THANK YOU.
Secondly, it seems there are 10 total OST tracks found here: http://ca.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=6B76FAD9DAD961D7
EDIT:
I really enjoy the opening song. Can it be confirmed that Sakimoto composed that one?
The Main Theme is really nice.
Beautiful Gallia is absolutely beautiful...
Desperate Fight is nice, although a bit too similar to "Desperate Fight" from FFXII at times.
Randgrith City is really playful, but also quite beautiful. A little reminiscent of Rabanastre.
Everyday Training is a bit boring to me, but parts of it are enjoyable.
Street Fighting definitely reminds me more of FFXII. This is a good thing.
Hope for Tomorrow is another slow, melodic piece. It's quite nice, but not my favorite of the samples offered.
Daily Life of the 7th Platoon is a playful militaristic march that reminds me of FFXII again, if it were set in Colonial times
The Field is very nice as well. A bit dark at times, but it has a very nice melody.

1. Well, the password literally means "rpgmm dispises stealing links" which means that he/she does not want people to disseminate the download link directly.
2. The opening song is not composed by Sakimoto.
3. I am not so happy as there are too few orchestrated pieces. But whatever... x.x

I don't care at all since Sakimoto's synth is so good, it can even do/convey things an orchestra can't... and here I think it is better than ever. (and also uses some new sounds/samples, the instrument he used a lot in Legaia: Duel Saga also makes a comeback in "Randgrith Archduke's Family" )
The tracks that are orchestrated though, mainly Main Theme, Valkyria's Awakening and Final Decisive Battle, are amazing... you can only get such a huge sound with an orchestra.
Overall this is up there with the best of Sakimoto.
My only real complaint is that there should have been a staff roll by Sakimoto... the J-Pop song (No Matter The Distance) is good but it doesn't compare to his ending themes.
Btw, Final Decisive Battle makes me wish that The Battle For Freedom from FFXII was orchestrated as well.
I just noticed on gmronline that the actual OST will have a final track named 26 Succeeded Wish ~Piano Solo~ , so that solves my problem with No Matter The Distance being the final track.

I really love Desperate Fight, especially the section at 1:23-1:39. That sounds so heroic and I love horn melody!
