Round 2, Pairing 32: "Still More Fighting (FFVII)" vs. "The Extreme (FFVIII)"

"Extreme" is a truely amazing piece. Listening to it just puts me in amazement, I really like the piano bit. So this vote should be easy, not really. My inner fanboy just loves "Still More Fighting".

Well, let's see. The Extreme. Somewhat painfully slow opening until the piano arrives, and even still semi-slow after that. Crash, attacked by reminiscence with the traditional battle theme bassline, joined moments later by that same catchy piano theme in doubletime, then with catchy synth/percussion. After there, some neat stuff and the usual activity you'd expect from a final boss theme.

And...Still More Fighting. Catchy deep tripletish melody, with fancy drumset work (a lot of fun tom stuff), later with quarter note triplets/12-8 quarter notes, something I love to have fun with on the cymbal that I react to far too much, one of that catchiest runs I've ever heard...

...and my vote goes to the song that brought me through every boss fight humming like a maniac.

I also might be subconciously affected by the fact that Those Who Fight Further was so neat. (And it had more cowbell.)

Uh. "Still More Fighting" I guess. It has less parts that drag. I do love "The Extreme", but sometimes I feel as if I'm waiting around for something to happen.

Easy choice here. 'The Extreme' is my favorite battle theme ever (besides Lunar 2's final battle). It is amazing on all fronts; hectic, melodic, creepy, dangerous, urgent. I just can't get enough of it, ever. This is also possibly the track I listen to the most, ever.

love The Extreme... love it to death. It's so awesome... not too loud, not too crazy, but fast and rythmic enough to feel like a final battle should. So amazing, so so amazing...

I vote for "The Extreme." It is a much better battle theme in the end. Despite it's lack of movement in the first few moments, it just adds to the effect of the latter part of the track. "Still More Fighting" was good, but when compared to "The Extreme" it falls short.

The extreme is probably one of the worst battle themes i have heard not memorable at all and drags like crazy in the beginning. nobuo dissopointed me in this one. still more fighting isn't strawberry cake with a cherry on top but it beats extreme like nothing. i actually tuned out when i was listening to the extreme.

I said in one of my posts that my favourite battle theme was The Extreme. I hope my voting for it doesn't come as too big of a surprise... :)

Oh, btw, this is a horrible pairing.

Admittedly, Stll More Fighting uses my favourite ride pattern - 3 against 2 - to neat effect. But in terms of mysterious effect and depth, The Extreme wins hands down. I move that a battle theme has never had such an amazing intro.
It's so innovative - the vocoded reminder of Fithos Lusec etc - and the mysterious, expectant harp ostinatos. Brilliant. And then the uptempo section - brilliant melody, a wonderful little light-speed synthesiser duel, and that bit where the drums drop out and then do that delayed crash...just awesome.
I could go on! :)

Seriously, everyone seems to love all of FFVII's bad tracks, but hate the good ones ;)

"Still More Fighting" is out, "The Birth of God" got whacked; but oh "Main Theme" and "Aerith. . ." can go on :p

I replayed the Sephiroth --Aeris-> AMV at least 5 times in a row. It was almost spiritual.

Can't remember the music for the life of me, though. ;)
