Are there any folk songs that you enjoy musically? It can be the actual song, or just the melody.

I'm not a very big fan of folk songs, although I can't say I have much experience in the area. I am, however, fond of Greensleeve's melody (I've never heard a lyrical version).

But the lyrical version would probably ruin it for me....

My favourite version of Greensleeves is the one by Loreena McKennitt. I can send it to you if you want BM.

There's one folkish/traditional piece that she preforms that I really like, called Santiago. Aparently the track is adapted from a traditional spanish melody.

I would appriciate that Resk. :)

Probably any folk songs I'd discover and like would come from either the spanish or asain culture. Of course an exception wouldn't suprise me; its just that I love eastern intruments and the feel of spanish music. Areas like the US, Europe, or Ireland don't interest me much so I can't really see enjoying the folk music all that much; Greensleeves being an exception.

I'd love to get into African folk songs as well, I can just imagine....

The melody of 'Shenandoah' is perhaps my favorite of all folk songs. So sweet and somber.

I played it last year with my concert band, and if I make All-State chorus this year that is one of the pieces we are singing.

I love Bartok's work. When I was just a little lad, my teacher made me learn the first movement of his "6 Rumanian Folk Dances." I hated it so much, because it was so dissonant and the rhythms were so weird. Then, one Saturday morning (I remember this really well), I sat down to play it and realized how amazingly cool the piece was. That was my introduction to 20th century music -- I still like to sit down and play the complete set for fun.

A traditional Celtic air called "Crested Hens." If anyone wants to hear it, let me know and I'll upload it. The arrangement I like best is by a modern Irish-traditional band called Solas and sounds quite a bit like something Mitsuda might have written.
